Happy Earth Day fellow Earthlings!
I am a lover of all things ‘nature’ and a junior doctor in the NHS. I am sure you too have noticed the hectic nature of the world today; from the recent pandemic to the unpredictable weather we see on a daily basis. You may be thinking, ‘how does that relate to being a medic?’. Well, there are many links. Firstly, the fallout of a changing climate will have huge implications on health, for example, an increase in death directly due to heat. Also, the NHS is one of the largest contributors to the UKs greenhouse gas emissions.
We wouldn’t expect to be able to live rent-free anywhere so why do we think we can do this to the Earth without there being a price?! The planet will physically still be standing millennia from now, the question is, for how long will it put up with us humans?
The origins story
For so many years now, I have been wanting to do a blog like this as I talk to anyone and everyone I meet in real life about this topic. There were many reasons I didn’t:
- Holding out for a witty name – I spent ages trying to think of a cool name. In the end, Earthling Med was born as a play on Earthling Ed, a popular activist. Comment below if you think of a cooler name, I’d love to hear it!
- There’s always tomorrow… – and tomorrow never came until I committed to a date (Earth day!). And also, with the climate crisis, every day and every action counts. Tomorrow is not guaranteed!
- I am always learning about new things about this issue and when I talk to other people about it, they are usually interested as they never realised a lot of even the really basic stuff they can do to make a positive change. I needed to do more than just talk to people about it, and so Earthling Med was born, to spread the word even further. It is for anyone and everyone, not just medics! If Earthling Med can make an impact on just one person, I will be content 🙂
What’s the forecast on Earthling Med?
Now that I am up and running, I will regularly be sharing my two pennies on a whole range of climate related issues, usually with a medical slant. Expect updates from my garden, recommendations of how you can live more sustainably, product reviews and general uploads of the goings on in my Earthling brain. Check out my ‘Landing Soon…‘ page to see what to expect and even drop me a line if you want to collaborate/ guest blog. If you learn something new or cool from reading my blog, please pass the knowledge on to others or share via social media! Small changes can make a big difference collectively.
I have created this blog and Instagram on Earth Day to spread the word about all the ways we can be kind to the Earth. What will you be doing for the Earth today? Perhaps you can set a challenge for yourself to do something kind for our awesome planet on a regular basis – check out my Recommendations page for inspiration! I promise, it doesn’t have to cost the Earth!
